When I was pregnant with my eldest child (JC)--I was thinking of getting a college fund for him. I believe education is one of the most valuable intangible thing that my children will treasure in their entire life. Education is the best gift the parents could give to their children. No one can take it away from them no matter where they are. I am hoping my children will get the education they need so I talked to my husband about it and he said we are going to get a CF for our son.
Few weeks later after I gave birth to JC--I asked my husband when we will open the 529 CF account but then he said we are not going to do it. I was upset about it and wondering why because he wouldn't tell me--so I did some research on the internet and I did get a lot of information. One of it that I have read was the reason for you to open a college fund for your child. There are at least two of these three things that you should consider: (1) If you are certain that your child will go to college, (2) If you have enough money to pay for it and (3) If the grandparents are willing to pay or help you pay for the college fund of their grandchildren.
According to a broker/advisor 3 years back, "Investing on the 529 College Fund was not doing good lately and the rate of return on investing such account at this time is not good either"--Which was why my husband did not put his money into it. I am no longer worried about how our kids will pay for their college tuition & fees. My husband has set aside some fund for them not a college fund but they will probably get it whenever they're ready for college. Here are some websites you will find helpful if you think of getting a 529 College Fund for your child:
